In 1999 we established the Paniolo Hall of Fame, by presenting awards of honor and recognition to individuals for their contributions to the paniolo heritage and for perpetuating the industry.  There are now 81 members of the Paniolo Hall of Fame.

PANIOLO ORAL HISTORY PROJECT

We are pleased to announce the completion of the Oral History Interviews book for 2003, which people are now adding to their collection. Previously printed books for 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 are also available for purchase.  In addition, we have a Members Book which includes pictures and brief biographies of all members inducted from 1999 through 2002.  Members inducted after 2002 will be included in a second book to be compiled later. A link to an  order form for all existing books is found at the top of this webpage.   Books are sold at our cost to print and handle.

These oral interviews are an ongoing effort to capture the life stories of our paniolo for posterity.   All Interviews and pictures are also posted on our website and can be reviewed and downloaded for free.

The Paniolo Hall of Fame was initiated by the O`ahu Cattlemen’s Association in 1999 to recognize yesterday’s and today’s paniolo statewide who have contributed to keeping Hawai`i’s paniolo heritage alive, and to honor those who made the paniolo culture legendary.

Now in it’s 8th year, there are 94 members, both living and deceased, in the Paniolo Hall of Fame including 13 new members who will be inducted in November, 2007.  All of the islands are represented by its members.

All of these paniolo are selected through a nomination process.  The O`ahu Cattlemen’s Association mails out the criteria and nomination forms annually.  Anyone may request and submit a nomination form.

The Paniolo Hall of Fame presently consists of photo portraits, short biographies and oral history interviews.  The portrait exhibit has been displayed at Honolulu Hale (City Hall), at the Annual Statewide Paniolo Festival, at the Hawaii Cattlemen’s Council annual meeting, at Parker Ranch Museum and the Hawaii State Library.  It continues to circulate to various locations statewide and may be requested by contacting OCA.

Oral History Interviews of the living Hall of Fame members have been completed for the O`ahu Cattlemen’s Association by Anna Ilima Loomis, consulting with the Center for Oral History, University of Hawai`i.  The objective of the interview project is to capture the life stories of as many of these paniolo as possible, before they are lost to future generations. The Oral History Interview project will continue into future years, as long as OCA is able to raise the funds for the project.  Contributions are welcome.

The published interviews are available for purchase from OCA, and are also accessible through the Hawai`i State Library System, and at the University of Hawai`i Center for Oral History.

The O`ahu Cattlemen’s Association is grateful for the cooperation of the many paniolo scattered throughout these islands, their families; and our many sponsors, big and small, who have made this project possible.
