Ranching for Profit Workshop Returns to Hawaii
After a 14-year hiatus, the Ranching for Profit (RFP) workshop returned to Hawaiʻi in August 2025, convening 38 ranchers from across the state in Hilo.
Organized by the Hawaiʻi Rangeland Stewardship Foundation (HRSF), Hawaiʻi Cattlemen’s Council (HCC), and Hawaiʻi Grazing Lands Coalition (HGLC), with support from the Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative (GLCI) and the National Grazing Lands Coalition (NatGLC), the three-day course was led by Ranch Management Consultants instructors Melinda and Shanon Sims.
The curriculum covered a range of topics central to ranch business and land stewardship, including profit planning, succession, grazing management, ecosystem health, and climate resilience.
The program also featured guest presentations: Cherryle Heu introduced drought and climate planning tools from the Pacific Drought Knowledge Exchange, and Jill Ficke-Beaton provided updates on Pacific Islands Area NRCS programs.
Feedback from participants underscored the workshop’s value. A majority reported plans to implement operational changes, and nearly all expressed interest in a potential six-day RFP School in Hawaiʻi.
HRSF and its partners will review survey results and evaluate next steps toward hosting a full RFP School in the islands.
