Max Smith as been a cowboy for over 70 years and was Hawaii’s State Veterinarian for 30 years. Widely known throughout the state for importing and breeding many fast and talented ranch, rodeo, race and show horses, he also competed successfully in Hawai`i rodeo and show arenas - winning trophy buckles every year for at least 20 years. Born and raised in the ranching traditions of Arizona, he now owns and operates Gunstock Ranch. He has been involved locally in many cattle and horse operations including Waikoloa Stables, Waialua Ranch and others since moving to Hawai`i in 1965. An all-around horseman, those who know him tell how he can teach any horse to load in a trailer by asking it to “please” get in. A charter member of the American Quarter Horse Association and former quarter horse judge, Doc Smith shares his skills and ranch facilities with 4-H, High School Rodeo and others.
