Ranch Name | Hawai'i
For more than six decades, Sally H. Rice has been a respected leader, advocate, and steward of Hawaiʻi’s ranching community. Through her dedication to ranch operations, agricultural advancement, and service to the cattle industry, she has helped preserve the traditions of the Hawaiian paniolo while embracing innovations that strengthened the future of ranching throughout the islands.
Sally’s ranching journey began on Maui when she and her husband, the late Freddy Rice, returned as newlyweds to work at Grove Ranch, owned by Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company. There, she developed a lifelong commitment to the ranching lifestyle, working alongside Freddy in the daily responsibilities of caring for livestock, managing pasture resources, and supporting ranch operations.
Their work later took them to Kahuku Ranch on Hawaiʻi Island, where Sally became an active partner in improving ranch infrastructure and range management. Together, they helped develop water systems that expanded productive grazing lands and collaborated with the University of Hawaiʻi to study soil composition and improve forage grasses. These pioneering efforts demonstrated that combining traditional paniolo knowledge with scientific research could improve pasture health, increase cattle production, and promote sustainable stewardship of Hawaiʻi’s ranch lands.
Later, while Freddy served as General Manager of Puʻuwaʻawaʻa Ranch, Sally continued as his trusted partner, assisting with ranch operations and supporting ongoing improvements in grazing management, soil health, and cattle production. Her work reflected a lifelong belief that healthy land and responsible management are essential to successful ranching.
Beyond the ranch, Sally was an influential leader during the formative years of the Hawaiʻi Cattlemen’s Association, helping strengthen relationships among ranchers and supporting the advancement of Hawaiʻi’s cattle industry. She also contributed to the success of the Parker Ranch Bull Sale, one of the state’s premier cattle events, and generously shared her time and expertise with numerous ranching and agricultural nonprofit organizations dedicated to preserving Hawaiʻi’s agricultural heritage.
Known for her humility, quiet leadership, and unwavering commitment to service, Sally H. Rice earned the respect of ranchers across Hawaiʻi not by seeking recognition, but by consistently strengthening the people, organizations, and lands that define the paniolo way of life.
Her legacy is measured not only in healthier ranches and stronger agricultural institutions, but in the generations of ranching families who continue to benefit from her leadership, vision, and enduring commitment to Hawaiʻi’s ranching heritage.
In recognition of her lifetime of service and lasting contributions to Hawaiʻi’s cattle industry and paniolo culture, Sally H. Rice was inducted into the Paniolo Hall of Fame.
